It's time to make dismantling the racist and sexist “school-to-prison pipeline” a priority.

With the increased attention to criminal justice reform and racial justice, this is the time to get serious about dismantling the racist and sexist “school-to-prison pipeline.”

While both male and female students are being pushed out of school and into the criminal justice system, girls and young women experience criminalization and racial profiling by law enforcement in ways that are overlooked. The tragic reality is that Black and Brown girls and young women in the juvenile justice system are overwhelmingly victims of physical and sexual abuse and violence.

The safety of our girls and young women should be on the frontline of criminal justice reform.

"The Criminalization of Black and Brown Girls - Adversity, Abuse and the School-to-Prison Pipeline" was co-presented by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women - NoVA and the Virginia Chapter of the National Organization for Women.

Presenters included Cherice Hopkins, Senior Counsel of Rights4Girls; Valerie Slater, Executive Director of Rise for Youth; Juandiego Wade of the Charlottesville City School Board, and Ta'Dreama McBride, Youth Leader, RISE for Youth, among others.

Join us to learn what we can do now - in Virginia - to dismantle the pipeline of abuse.
