Statement of Connie Cordovilla, VA NOW President
president@vanow.org
July 5, 2019

Virginia NOW demands that VA Senator Amanda Chase retract her recent Facebook statements regarding women, rape and handguns. Responding to a discussion of 2nd Amendment gun rights, Chase remarked that it's "those who are naive and unprepared that end up raped. Sorry but I'm not going to be a statistic."

Join VA NOW President Connie Cordovilla and Legislative VP Marj Signer, Charlottesville NOW board members, and many other advocates and elected officials Tuesday July 9th in Richmond to rally for gun violence prevention.

Today, we're asking you to take action to protect reproductive health services in Virginia. You've probably heard about "TRAP" restrictions on clinics. Yes, NARAL Pro-Choice VA and other leaders of the women's health community made some progress but we have suffered a setback. Please take a few minutes to submit a public comment to the Virginia Board of Health regarding politically motivated restrictions designed to shut down Virginia abortion providers.

Governor Northam has called for a special session of the General Assembly to address the epidemic of gun violence. This is a bold move and one that Virginia NOW supports 100%. Not only are we all affected by gun violence tragedies like the one in Virginia Beach but as women's advocates we know that women bear a special burden: a staggering portion of violence against women is fatal, and a key driver of these homicides is access to guns. And now, in a move shocking even for the gun lobby, the NRA is trying to block renewal of the Violence Against Women Act .

Define YOUR Feminist Agenda at the NOW National Conference
July 19 - 21, in Minneapolis

The conference, Feminist Agenda Rising: Our Time is NOW, is a can't miss weekend celebration of feminist empowerment.

Join us in Minneapolis where you’ll attend informative, relevant workshops, enjoy inspiring speakers, including Comedian Lizz Winstead, State Senator Amy Klobuchar, U.S. Representative Betty McCollum, Minnesota State Auditor Julie Blaha, and many others.

You’ll help NOW build a national Feminist Agenda geared for action. We’ll celebrate and strategize for a historically female 2020 election and we’ll mount our fight against the onslaught of attacks on women’s freedoms in state houses across the country and assuredly at the Supreme Court in 2020.
